Artist Statement

My formative years were becoming an artist in Europe during the 1960’s. This was to be a time of extreme social unrest in the countries I resided in and in America.  I was a couple of years in Rome studying art at the Academia di belli Arti and subsequently twelve years in West Berlin at the S.H.f.b.K. where I had met my mentor, the painter Hermann Bachmann. His daughter Suzanne and I fell in love and I became part of the family. In 1971 I was with Bachmann”s close friend Jochen Seidel, in New York shortly before he hunged himself.

Because of the charged socio-political atmosphere and the fact that Bachmann had just destroyed most of his artwork and discontinued painting altogether, I was very much on my own as to what and how I would make art. I became immersed in revolution at the same time I was falling in love with Art and I had to figure out what to do. And I wasn’t about to throw the baby out with the bath water. She was too beautiful.

In 1973 I graduated from the S.H.f.b.K Berlin with a BFA and became docent at the school to teach life drawing. I stayed on working in Berlin until 1976. There were several shows of my work and many commissions. And I encountered a lot of great artists and crazy radicals.

I became a founding member of HUMAN BEING, an electronic music group in 1967. We performed in Berlin until we moved to North Africa for a year. On our return to Europe we landed in jail in Madrid but were relatively quickly released.

After I became recognized as a painter in Berlin, what evolved in my work was a fusion of socio-environmental themes with the continuous presence of a heroic feminine threatened by a brutal chauvinistic world. I had been lucky and somehow intuitively knew how to paint but was also keen on invention because I had originally wanted to be an aeronautical engineer. So I proceeded to conceive paintings and new ways to make them in which there is an obvious infatuation with Art and color as well as a deep concern for life and the human condition.

My body of work consisted of naturalistic sculpture; figures- portraits, landscapes and still life and later several major series of large tableaus ranging from geometric hard edge “Icons” [GENESIS] to layered expressionist Giclee experiments [WASTELANDS] to assemblage “Clichés” [COMBINES]; dealing with archetypal consciousness and the semiotic meanings of art utilizing alternative techniques and an ideographic vocabulary of anthropomorphic resemblances mirroring Dada’s use of found objects.

In 1976 I returned to the United States and had a family.  I continued to paint and show in New England, Miami and then New York City and received an artist residence in New London Ct. In 2005 I stopped painting. I began and continue to design, build and fly long rang drone camera planes. Initially the hope was to assist Burmese rebels with aerial reconnaissance.

In 2013 I began painting and exhibiting again in NYC with a solo show at THE NEW SCHOOL and in studios I created in the Dominican Republic with the help of local villagers. After painting many Dominican landscapes and portraits I began a new series of larger gestural abstract oil paintings. In New York I continue to paint my fascination with what art is, what it can mean, by turning my workspace into a university of ideas about art and what artists have done with them followed by my own enlightened works including now new forays into quantum physics in informing ideas for paintings.

In 2021 I continued experiments with layering paintings which I had begun with filming FLIQUETYCH in 1993 and with the WASTELANDS series of 2005. The new resulting digitally layered artworks were astonishing comprising both abstract and figurative elements of my paintings.

I spend my time now between NYC and the Dominican Republic painting, writing, building and flying sUASs for which I have been certified by FEMA to do Incident Search and Rescue.

I have also written and published my bizarre “Brief Memoirs” – TRACKING UNICORN & ASTRO VENUS. Available on AMAZON BOOKS: With over two hundred illustrations.
